Spain, a future logistics power
Between transport and warehousing, the sector accounts for 4% of jobs nationally and is estimated to grow by around 25% from 2019.
The logistics sector has proven to be one of the backbones of the economy, representing 7% of national GDP. At a time when exports are driving the GDP despite the fall in domestic demand, logistics is becoming a protagonist. In the first four months of the year, exports of goods increased by 9.2%, reaching 132,026 million euros (+9.2%) and imports accounted for 142,090 million, in both cases the highest figure ever recorded in the first four months of the year.
At the inauguration of a logistics sector congress at the beginning of June, Felipe VI stated that Spain is “a logistics power of the first order”. In recent decades, the investment made in various infrastructures has made it possible to strengthen the country’s strategic position as a double Europe-Africa and Atlantic-Mediterranean bridge. In this way, Spain aspires to become a top-level logistics hub.
The digital transformation also affects the logistics sector and the institutions have decided to promote the process. One of the ten sections to which the Government plans to allocate European funds is to resilient infrastructures and ecosystems. In fact, within this area, 6,667 million euros are earmarked for Sustainable, Safe and Connected Mobility. Among the different types of plans is Intermodality and logistics, which seeks to “improve the efficiency of the transport and distribution system for goods, by promoting intermodality and the modernisation and improvement of our distribution nodes”.
Thus, the Ministry of Transport has been financing different projects. Among them, it has allocated 436 million euros in aid to 69 public and private companies to develop initiatives for the decarbonisation and digitalisation of freight transport.
