Empack and Logistics & Automation to showcase cutting-edge sustainable solutions at its next edition

The leading trade fairs in the packaging, packaging and logistics sector will showcase the industry's most cutting-edge sustainable solutions next November at IFEMA. Environmentally friendly inks, recyclable inflatable mattresses that solve the problem of load movement, or packaging made from recycled or plant-based components will be some of the innovations.
In 2018, these fairs were the first to measure their carbon footprint in order to understand their environmental impact during the fair and take measures to reduce it.
So far, more than 250 exhibitors have confirmed their participation, including Still, Polypal, Bizerba and Aranco. Many of them will present products and services related to biodegradable and composite packaging, waste management and recycling, intelligent packaging, or packaging robots and automation.

73% of Spaniards make their purchases with ethical or ecological motives in mind, according to a report published in 2019 by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU). What’s more, according to Accenture, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased ethical and sustainable consumption among the population. In this sense, there is no doubt that sustainability has become a fundamental pillar for both companies and society today.

For Empack and Logistics & Automation, fairs of the Easyfairs group that have established themselves as the main annual meeting on the future of packaging technology, packaging, packaging and logistics, sustainability is also a pillar that will act as a cross-cutting element in its next edition. Thus, on 25 and 26 November at IFEMA we will be able to find the most cutting-edge solutions in the sectors covered by its shows. Proposals to adapt containers and packaging to the circular economy such as environmentally friendly inks, recyclable inflatable mattresses that solve the problem of cargo movement, or packaging made from recycled or plant-based components are just some examples.

During the fair, the challenges to achieve a greener future will be addressed and topics related to the replacement of fossil and limited fuels with renewable and clean fuels, the promotion of hybrid or electric transport, the optimisation of energy expenditure, the use of packaging made from recycled and reusable materials, and the maximum use of cargo space in warehouses and vehicles to avoid a greater impact of pollution on the environment.

As for the logistics sector, the show has the support of the sector’s main organisations, which will play a major role at the fair. This sector is undergoing a huge transformation and is key to Industry 4.0 and e-commerce. And, despite being responsible for 25% of CO2 emissions in Spain, according to data from the European Environment Agency, it is increasingly committed to a more intelligent and innovative distribution of goods that is also environmentally friendly.

In fact, according to studies carried out by CEL, efficiency in logistics and transport without renouncing the commitment to sustainability is one of the most important factors for the sector.

One example of this is Still, a sponsor of Logistics & Automation, which offers pioneering solutions in the intralogistics sector using recyclable materials and sustainable manufacturing processes and, when developing new products, considers their impact on the environment from the outset.

The Instituto Tecnológico del Embalaje, Transporte y Logística (ITENE), partner of the fair, will play an important role in Empack Madrid. ITENE is a technological institute, located in Valencia, which fosters scientific research and the promotion of sustainability in the fields of packaging, logistics, transport and mobility. Thus, it has developed different technological solutions aimed at adapting plastic packaging to the requirements established by the European Union to move towards a circular economy by 2030.

The development of biodegradable and compostable active and intelligent packaging that brings greater performance and acceptable economy to the value chain, and facilitates large-scale implementation and marketing, as well as the commitment to recycling and reuse of plastic waste for advanced 3D printing applications, are some of its most recent projects, which can be seen in detail in November.

Meanwhile, Bizerba – which has managed to considerably reduce the electricity consumption of its equipment -, and Aranco – which works to reduce film waste and cares for the environment by reducing waste (average 50%) – are two prominent sponsors of Empack Madrid, which will present their projects at the next edition.

Sustainability and corporate social responsibility are part of the Easyfairs Group’s business philosophy. In fact, it is a pioneer in the use of Smart Badge technology within the trade fair sector, a proposal aimed at the zero waste trend. It has been used in all its events since 2016 and is committed to a sustainable economy, based on saving paper through the use of technology. Thus, Smart Badge acts as a virtual folder that stores all the information and companies can offer their products in digital format.

Likewise, the Empack and Logistics & Automation shows were the first to measure their carbon footprint in 2018, with the aim of finding out the environmental impact of the event during the event in order to take measures to reduce it.

Easyfairs: first private trade fair organiser in Spain and Portugal
