Element Logic reveals why the finance department should lead investment in warehouse automation
The intralogistics specialist publishes a guide for CFOs to rigorously evaluate investment in warehouse automation
Most warehouse automation projects are driven by Operations and only reach Finance in the final approval phase. As a result, many investments are evaluated primarily from an operational efficiency standpoint, relegating variables such as the impact on margins, cost structure, or company valuation to a secondary position. This is one of the main conclusions of the latest white paper, "The Financial Decision Behind Warehouse Automation," published by Element Logic. The document, available at this link, is aimed at CFOs and finance directors who need to evaluate warehouse automation investments that could significantly impact the business's operational and financial structure for the next two decades. The white paper analyzes what is actually being purchased when a warehouse is automated. Beyond the hardware, what is acquired is the ability to manage higher volumes without a proportional increase in staff, absorb seasonal peaks with greater operational stability, and sustainably improve margins. The main driver for achieving this is labor, as automation eliminates much of the time operators spend moving around the warehouse and allows for the handling of more orders per hour with the same team. The guide also introduces an argument rarely seen in these types of projects: a permanent reduction in operating costs not only improves profit margins but also directly increases the company's value. In a company valued at five times its earnings, annual savings of around half a million dollars (approximately €437,000) can translate into more than €2 million in added value—a figure that in many cases exceeds the total cost of the system.
